Powdery mildew is a frequent problem faced by plants.
This fungal disease appears as a white, powdery coating on the leaves, stems, and sometimes even the flowers of plants. It can affect a wide variety of plants, from garden vegetables like cucumbers and squash to ornamental plants such as roses.
The causes of powdery mildew include humid conditions with poor air circulation. It also thrives in certain temperature ranges. Once the fungus takes hold, it can reduce the plant’s ability to photosynthesize effectively, as the powdery layer can block sunlight.
Prevention measures are important. Adequate spacing between plants to ensure good air flow, proper watering techniques (avoiding overhead watering), and maintaining a healthy soil environment can all help to prevent the onset of powdery mildew. In case of an outbreak, there are fungicidal sprays available, but some gardeners also use natural remedies like a mixture of baking soda and water.
