Cauliflower Ear

Cauliflower ear is a condition that often affects certain individuals. It is named so because the ear takes on a swollen, deformed appearance similar to that of a cauliflower.

This condition is typically caused by trauma to the ear, especially in sports like wrestling and rugby. When the external ear is repeatedly hit or rubbed, it can lead to bleeding under the skin of the ear. The blood then clots and if not properly treated, can cause the cartilage in the ear to be distorted as it heals.

Treatment for cauliflower ear is most effective if it is done early. Initially, draining the blood clot and applying proper pressure dressings can prevent further deformation. In some cases, surgical correction may be required if the ear has already become severely deformed.

Cauliflower ear, while often a cosmetic concern, can also potentially affect hearing in some rare cases. Therefore, it is important for those involved in high – impact sports to take preventive measures such as wearing proper protective gear.
